Railway Fitter Jobs

The role of a Mechanical maintenance fitter is an important one within the railway industry and duties include repairing and servicing the traction units that pull trains, passenger carriages and goods wagons. Some railway fitters team up with electricians to build new traction units and carriages.

The railway industry is in constant need of repair and maintenance and therefore the railway fitter has the responsibility of carrying out routine maintenance and safety checks. If units are not working efficiently, the fitter uses a range of machine and hand tools to fit spare parts, re-wire and re-adjust to eliminate the fault. Therefore the ability to work from technical drawings and manuals is very important.
