Pressure mounts on Network Rail over non-barrier crossings

Sun 21 Mar 2010

A minister from the Scottish parliament is putting pressure Network Rail to fit all of its level crossings with barriers.

Jamie Stone MSP has tabled a motion to force Network Rail to construct barriers at every level crossing after three of his constituents were killed when their car failed to stop at a level crossing with no barrier.

Mr Stone said: “We all know that these open level crossings are dangerous and that appalling tragedies in my constituency would have been avoided if they had barriers.

“At a meeting with Network Rail and the railway police at the end of February, all MSPs heard was the familiar list of excuses and absolutely no indication of an acceptance that barriers should be installed.”

There are 23 level crossings in Scotland which do not have barriers.
