Department & how it relates to the role:
Government and Corporate Affairs is responsible for the professional and consistent management of all internal and external stakeholder relationships in order to deliver an improved reputation for Network Rail. This includes communication with all employees, national and local government, the media, external liaison, and Network Rail’s members. The function is also responsible for managing the brand and visual image of Network Rail. The teams within G&CA work to develop trust and understanding with stakeholders, using effective channels of communications to build positive relationships.
Our Media Relations team promotes, defends and explains the vision and actions of Network Rail, engaging stakeholders and enhancing the company's corporate reputation. We do this by speaking positively and persuasively to stakeholders – especially opinion formers and public at large – through the local, regional, national and international media, and focusing on the media, monitoring and setting the news agenda and building productive working relationships. We work in tandem with our colleagues in Government & Corporate Affairs to ensure consistency of messages and effectiveness of delivery, and reach out to all sections of the business to understand their work, challenges and successes to inform media activity. As one of our Media Relations Managers you will play a key role; developing, implementing and co-coordinating a media strategy to promote our initiatives and protect our interests
You’ll implement the regional media relations strategy, planning and controlling a full-media, 24-hours a day, year-round press desk service for the business. You’ll effectively manage the processes, quality standards and operational systems for regional media co-ordination, as well as directing and controlling the output of press releases, briefing sessions, photo opportunities and media visits.
You’ll use your expert relationship building skills to maintain regular contact with editors and journalists, ensuring they understand our role and are aware of key stories. Clarifying and correcting misconceptions is key to this role – to this end you’ll monitor media comment and prepare suitable responses aimed at clarifying / correcting any misconceptions. Monitor the effectiveness of press coverage for Network Rail, taking corrective action where necessary.Deliver media campaigns or events within agreed cost, timescales and quality parameters.

Essential:
· A proven track record in journalism or public relations
· Excellent writing and broadcasting skills
· A good instinct for media relations
· Ability to work in a team

· Significant experience in public affairs, lobbying, or local government?
· A proven understanding of all relevant political calendars?
· A wide network of stakeholder contacts?
· Degree level education and/or a relevant professional qualification?
