Network Rail Ltd |
Network Rail took responsibility for Britain’s rail infrastructure in October 2002 with a mandate to improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of the network. Its principal activities are to run, operate, maintain and – in co-operation with train operators and other fund providers – invest in and develop the national rail network. This comprises the care of the UK’s 20,000 miles of track, 40,000 bridges and tunnels, signalling systems and level crossings as well as operational management of 17 major stations, 2,500 other stations and 8,200 commercial properties. In 2002 around 78.6% of trains ran on time. In 2007/08, punctuality reached 89.9%, and it is now over 90%.
